The design originated because a greenhouse with sidewalls at an angle of 60 to 70 degrees from the horizontal and a roof with a slope of 30 degrees has been found to be more efficient for the transmission of radiant energy than a structure with the same roof slope but with vertical sidewalls. During mid winter, when the sun is relatively low above the horizon, the slanted sidewalls transmit more radiant energy than vertical sidewalls.
